And I think it is partly a "big family" thing (or should I say a "Catholics breed like rabbits" thing). My El Paso family (42 first cousins on my Mom's side, born to or adopted by my Mom's 10--yes 10!--siblings) can all totally relate. Every birthday, wedding, graduation either costs a gazillion dollars OR ends up having to be a pot luck in someone's backyard to be affordable. But as big of a headache as a LARGE family can be, it totally rocks to know that you have all the primos in the world at your back if you need them. Oh yeah, and my Dad's second wife is Mexican and I swear to you, I've never had dinner at their house when she didn't have a VAT of pinto beans cooking, plus calabacitas, tamales, and green chile by the bucketful ready just in case lots of family showed up.
