turns out my dog is a chicken

it’s been raining a lot the last couple of weeks and we’ve had lots of thunderstorms–mostly during the night. i’ve learned during these occurrences that my dog, buddy, a strapping yellow lab, is terrified of thunder.

my first experience with this was a week ago when at around 2 am i was startled awake by the heat of buddy’s breath on my face. i opened my eyes to find my beloved dog staring me in the face. he was clearly panicked and i reached out to pat the top of his head. i didn’t exactly know what was wrong so i got up and went to the door. i figured he needed to go potty. buddy was having none of that. he began pacing the floor and panting harder and harder. i was half asleep and it still didn’t occur me what was wrong with him. i got back in my bed with buddy close behind me. just then, the thunder clapped and buddy leapt off the floor and jumped in the bed with me, trying to get as close to me as he could.

now if you’ve never had a freakishly huge dog in the bed with you, let me tell you, it’s weird. i scooted him off the bed and encouraged him to try and go to sleep. i love my dog, don’t get me wrong. but i was freakin’ tired and didn’t feel like dealing with this shit in the middle of the night.

oh, did i mention that my husband slept peacefully through this entire ordeal? he did.
